planet earthI thought it would be appropriate for the month of May to focus on Mother Earth, right in time for Mother’s Day. According to the Vedic culture from ancient India, the Earth is one of our seven mothers (I will share all seven in a future post).  We get everything we need from the Earth–food, water, air, and the ingredients to make everything we can imagine.  Plus, she sure is beautiful and fascinating, isn’t she?

Just think:  the delicious meals you eat, the refreshing showers you take, the reviving breezes you breathe, you can thank Mother Earth.  What to speak of the amazing lightning shows, valuable jewels and gems, the immense and powerful ocean.  The Earth is a complete whole.  Here are some cool facts about our planet:

  • In 1963, a volcano suddenly burst out of the sea near Iceland, making a new island. It was called Surtsey, after the Icelandic god of fire. Just four years after Surtsey rose from the sea, 23 kinds of birds, 22 kinds of insects, and many different plants were living on the island.
  • The process of pollination involves bright, beautiful flowers attracting bees and insects to drink their nectar. The bees pick up pollen on their legs and transfer it to other plants so that the plants can reproduce. As an added bonus, bees take the nectar to their hive and place it in the cell of a comb. The fanning of their wings turns it into honey!
  • According to an article entitled “Water’s Psychological Benefits” at Psychcentral.com, “Minerals in the sea air reduce stress; negatively charged ions in the sea air combat free radicals, improving alertness and concentration; salt in the water preserves tryptamine, serotonin and melatonin levels in the brain, which aid in diminishing depression or increasing your overall sense of wellness; and research has demonstrated that the sounds of waves alter the brain’s wave patterns, producing a state of relaxation.”

These are just a few examples of the miracles, healing energies and powerful forces around us.  I hope you can get out and appreciate Nature too!
